Partner profile

Warsaw University of Technology (WUT), founded in 1826, is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Central Europe and the largest university of technology in Poland. Beside academic teaching WUT is very active and successful in research performed within individual research projects financed by public and private bodies (ap. 650 grants/year). The Institute of Micromechanics and Photonics (IMP), is part of Faculty of Mechatronics at WUT. The main (internationally recognized) research activities include: full-field optical metrology (interferometric, holographic, grid and speckle methods and tomography), optical sensing, photonics/optics devices and microsystems design& technologies, image processing and development of optical techniques for multimedia technologies, virtual and augmented reality applications (with strong optical sensing background). IMP owns modern laboratories incl. interferometric and holographic laboratory, optical methods of testing in experimental mechanics lab., spectroscopic laboratory, optical sensors lab, 3D/4D measurement lab. and virtual reality studio, clean room and optical workshop.

Role in the project

WUT is responsible for development of Surgeon-Model Virtual Reality (SMVR) system based on haptic interaction with 3D interactive model. Testing of dynamic, full-field 3DMADMAC measurement system for validation and assessment of its usefulness for musculo-skeletal model development is also planned.  The WUT is member of the Project Management Team.

Expertise/leadership

IMP realises numerous projects for PL Committee for Scientific Researches, other research institutes and industry and SME’s.  Also activities connected directly to medical applications and virtual reality are constantly realized. Most important are: a) 6th EU FP "AURORA" (development of 4D shape measurement of lower body and its clinical applications, role of WUT has been connected with data analysis, compression and some recognition and landmarks tracking algorithms), 2004-2007, b) project focused on tele-screening diagnosis of young people on the base of 3D measurement of whole body realized together with Warsaw Medical University (WUT develops mobile measurement system and software packages for supporting of medical diagnosis), 2008-2011, c) Internet Virtual Studio for interactive content production (SME), cooperation from 2007.
